Season 1 Episode 5 Quotes

Tami: Can I help you make the decision?
Coach Taylor: Sure, go ahead. Make the decision. What’s your decision? Make the call.
Tami: Start Saracen.
Coach Taylor: Start Saracen? I cannot start Matt Saracen.
Tami: Start Voodoo.
Coach Taylor: I don’t want to start Voodoo.
Tami: Start me.
Coach Taylor : I would love to start you!

Smash Williams: Hey! Hey! Hey! It’s going down tonight! The Panthers ain’t even began to fight! Look, they wanna trash our locker room, we fittin’ to hit them with a sonic boom! The Panthers gonna have the last laugh, ‘cause we breakin’ our foot up in they!

Coach Taylor: I say if we do our best we will have success. And that we own the fourth quarter.

Lyla: Tim, just don’t do this okay?
Tim: Do what?
Lyla: Pretend that you’re interested in my school work. It’s obvious that you’re not, that you’re just trying to…
Tim: Have a conversation, Lyla? Yeah, I thought we may want to try and do that sometime.
Lyla: Okay. What do you want to talk about Tim? The fact that you’re sleeping with your paralyzed best friend’s girlfriend. Is that what you want to talk about, Tim? No, I don’t think we’re going to be doing a lot of talking.

Julie: So, do you think you’re gonna start?
Matt: Uh..I don’t know. Well, that’s the coach’s decision. You know, whatever he decides, I’m there for. But I’ve been working hard so I’m ready, I feel good about it. I just—you know whatever he feels is best for the team, that’s—that’s what I’m ready to do, so…
Julie: Dude, you need to chill out. I’m not ESPN.

Tyra: Just a bunch of overheated jocks, too dumb to know they have no future, fighting over a game that has no meaning, in a town from which there is no escape.

Lyla is out running, but then she finds herself running to Tim Riggin’s house. She thinks about it but then she knocks on the door and goes inside to visit Tim. Tim is happy and offers her something to eat. Lyla wants to know if Tim’s brother is at home and he’s not, so Tim and Lyla start kissing.
Coach Taylor, Julie (his daughter) and Tami (his wife) are driving to school. The Deejay’s on Panther Radio and a caller have no idea who is starting and they are speculating if it will be Voodoo Tatom or Matt Saracen. Julie is telling her father about other coaching jobs outside of Texas.
Coach Taylor sits with Ray “Voodoo” Tatom in his office to have a talk with him about who is going to start the next game. Voodoo Tatom tells the coach that he’s not there to make friends; he’s there to get noticed and recruited. In his mind there is no contest, Voodoo feels like the coach has seen him play and can decide how he wants to decide.
Matt Saracen and Landry Clarke are talking to Brian “Smash” Williams outside and a few girls walk by. Smash is trying to get their attention when one of them asks Matt if he’s going to be starting but Matt doesn’t know.
Coach Taylor is with his daughter Julie at Applebee’s writing plays on a napkin when his wife shows up. She takes the napkin and stuffs it down her shirt.
Tyra is a waitress at Applebee’s and she is serving coffee to Connor, a guy from L.A. Connor and Tyra have some small talk about Tyra taking over the shift of his original waitress. A car with some students from Dillon drives by and it brings out a serious reaction from Tyra.
At football practice Coach Mac has Voodoo Tatom running plays with the First Team. Matt Saracen is on one knee watching practice. Coach Taylor wants to know why Matt isn’t taking any practice reps but Coach Mac said that he thought Voodoo was starting. Coach Taylor gets irritated and tells Mac to include Matt in practice with the first team.
Connor drives up to the Applebee’s and Tyra is walking outside. He tells Tyra why he is in town and that he’s there to inspect oil fields for investors. He asks Tyra does she want a ride with him and she tells Connor that she’s not going to sleep with him.
Matt is on his way to practice and he runs into Julie. Matt is awkwardly speaking to Julie and Julie asks him if he’s going to start. Matt goes into this formal, clichéd speech and Julie tells him to chill out. Matt walks away from Julie telling himself that he’s stupid.
Jason is in rehab trying to throw a beach ball back and forth. His spirits are high and he makes a joke by calling a football play before he tosses the beach ball. Herc comes into the room and says that he wants to show Jason his future. Jason and Herc go to a ‘Quad Rugby’ contest. Jason is watching them play as they smash their wheelchairs into each other and pass the ball around.
Lyla Garrity goes to see her guidance counselor Tami Taylor. Tami wants to talk to her about her college plans. Tami is impressed with her grades. Lyla says she wants to wait and see what is going on with Jason first and that she wants to be there for him. Tami wants Lyla to think about what she wants to do separate from Jason.
Coach Mac is in Coach Taylor’s office copying the playbook for Voodoo Tatom. They have a confrontation about Coach Mac speaking to Buddy Garrity behind Coach Taylor’s back. Coach Mac admits that he feels like he should be the head coach but that he’s still not going to do anything to hurt the players. Coach Mac still wants to win whether he’s the head coach or not.

Tyra drives up to an oil field to meet with Connor. Connor says that Tyra is opinionated and that he likes it. Tyra says that she hates oil and what it did to her father and this town. Connor tells Tyra that he likes Los Angeles and that she would do alright out there. Connor asks Tyra out to dinner and she says yes.
Jason is moving around in his wheelchair and he sees a picture of Herc before he lost his legs. Herc notices Jason’s improvement, Jason and Herc have the exact same injury. Herc reveals that it took him over a year to get to where he could play ‘Quad Rugby’ because he wasted 6 months pitying himself.
Lyla and Tim are getting dressed and Tim is trying to start a conversation with Lyla. Lyla scoffs at him and says “What do you want to talk about….The fact that you’re sleeping with your paralyzed best friend’s girlfriend”
Coach Taylor is looking at game film. Tami stops by and asks if he’s going to be home for dinner. Coach Taylor says that everyone has branded him as the coach that can’t make a decision. Tami asks him to come home because the decision isn’t going to be good either way. Coach Taylor then begins to explain the pros and cons of Matt and Voodoo. Tami simply says that “it looks like you’ve made your decision coach”.

Connor is at Applebee’s and Tyra walks in; Connor is on the phone booking a flight back to L.A. earlier then expected. Connor still wants to go out with Tyra before he goes back; Tyra still wants to make the date.
Coach Taylor asks Matt to meet him in his office. Matt starts to say that he’s ready but the coach cuts him off and tells him that he’s going to start Voodoo. Matt is disappointed and not relieved.
There is a pep rally before the game. The band is playing and all the students, football players and cheerleaders are there. Coach Taylor tells everyone that they own the fourth quarter. Smash Williams takes over the pep rally and yelling and rhyming and getting the crowd excited. The team is getting on the bus and getting ready to go visit Jason Street before the big game.
Lyla is the first to show up in Jason’s room. Jason is happy to see her and then the rest of the team starts streaming in. Coach Taylor walks in with a football helmet, then Smash Williams and rest of the team walks in to visit and say a few words. Finally Tim Riggins walks in and tells Jason that he misses him. Jason was upset and relieved to finally see Tim.

Tyra shows up at Connor’s hotel room door. Connor thought he was going to pick her up so they could go out but Tyra asks him if she can come inside. She kisses Connor and they go inside the room.
The game is going to begin as both teams are hyped up and ready to play. Everyone is expecting to see a good game from Voodoo Tatom and a Panthers win. The game is filled with hard hits and Voodoo Tatom gets sacked. Voodoo Tatom is upset on the sidelines and he’s knocking water cups and containers over.
The Panthers are losing 7 to 0. Coach Taylor calls a screen pass for Tim Riggins, but Voodoo Tatom is not going to run the play, he’s going to do what he wants. The ball is snapped and Tim is wide open but Voodoo Tatom tucks the ball under and starts to run up the middle. He puts on a couple of moves and runs for a touchdown. Coach Taylor is upset and tells Voodoo that he only gets that one time to disobey him but Voodoo is pointing to the scoreboard in defiance. The score is 7 to 7.
The team reacts to Voodoo’s play and the defense for the Panthers is hitting hard and gets the ball back for the Panthers.
Coach Taylor tries to call a play for the offense but Voodoo Tatom just walks out on the field and makes his own call. He calls a play to throw the ball to Smash Williams. Smash Williams signals Tim Riggins that he’s not going to catch the ball. The ball is snapped and Voodoo throws the ball at Smash Williams and there is an interception. The defensive player catches the ball and runs all the way for a touchdown. Score is now 14-7, Panthers are losing.
It’s half-time and Coach Taylor is yelling and screaming at Voodoo Tatom. Voodoo tells the coach to back off of him. Coach Taylor tells him that it’s over and that he’s done with having him in the game. Voodoo gets upset and throws his helmet and then his shoulder pads to the ground. Coach Taylor hands the football to Matt Saracen and tells him to warm up because he’s going to be playing the rest of the game.
There is a minute and 18 seconds left in the game and the Panthers are still losing 14-7. Matt Saracen is still the quarterback; Voodoo Tatum is not on the sidelines. Matt calls the play and passes to his wide receiver Dolia, who steps out of bounds to stop the clock. The ball is snapped and it’s a handoff to Smash Williams on the right side for a first down and he runs out of bounds to stop the clock. One the next play the ball is pitched to Smash Williams on the left side and he runs for more yards and gets out of bounds to stop the clock. Matt calls the same play but with a “twist”. The ball is snapped and Matt hands the ball off to Smash Williams, he runs to the left side and then hands the ball to Tim Riggins for a reverse. Tim runs to the right side and with a big block from Matt, Tim is able to dive into the end zone. The score is now 14-13.
Matt goes over to the sidelines and the Arnett Mead players look exhausted. Coach Taylor decides that they can definitely go for the two point conversion. Matt says they should give the ball to Smash. Coach Mac gives Matt a play to run.
Matt goes out with the rest of the offense to run a play for the two point conversion. It is an option play. The ball is snapped and Matt starts to run but then he pitches the ball to Smash. Smash starts to run towards the end zone but there is a defender there to meet him. Smash jumps in the air and after contact spins into the end zone. Dillon Panthers win 15-14.

Tyra wakes up Saturday morning in Connor’s hotel room. She’s alone in bed and then she starts calling for him. Connor comes into the room and hands her breakfast for one person. Tyra seems disappointed but Connor tells her that he has to catch his plane and then reminds her that he has a plane to catch. Connor starts to tell her that she’s a great girl and after Tyra cuts him off, he tells Tyra that he’s in a relationship in L.A. Then Tyra tells him that she has a boyfriend, too. Connor then awkwardly leaves the room and Tyra is left alone in the hotel room.
Coach Taylor wakes up in a great mood and he’s being very affectionate with his wife in front of Julie. Julie starts to protest them kissing and talking affectionately in front of her.
Matt Saracen wakes up with bruises and cuts but he’s happy that he was able to play in the game.
Panther Radio is having a very positive show about the coach and the Panthers win. Coach Taylor is out buying gas and the citizens of Dillon honking their horns at the Coach and giving him the thumbs up and lots of praise. The Coach is on his way to school for a meeting.
The camera cuts to Jason at the rehab facility; he’s at the gym doing work on his own by strapping weights to his hands so he can do bicep curls.
Coach Taylor is about to start his meeting when there are two men in suits speaking with Buddy Garrity. Buddy introduces the men to Coach Taylor and explains that they are there to investigate the eligibility of Ray “Voodoo” Tatom. There is going to be a formal investigation and if he’s deemed ineligible then Voodoo Tatom will be formally removed from the team and the Arnett Mead game will be a lose.
Coach Taylor shakes their hands and then goes to his meeting amid cheers for their victory against their bitter rivals Arnett Mead.

Tyra: Hey.
Jason: Tyra.
Tyra: Um…Look. I know we were never close buddies and I can only image the load of fake crap that you’ve had to put up with from people you hardly even know, and I am so not doing that. I just um–I came by to tell you how sorry I am that Tim hasn’t been in to see you. He wants to. Although, he won’t admit it, but he just can’t do it.
Jason: Yeah, why is that?
Tyra: He’s scared.
Jason: Oh, he’s scared. Yeah, well that’s Tim for you.
Tyra: Sure is. Well…
Jason: Well..thanks for coming.
Tyra: Yeah, yeah.
Jason: And you tell Tim whenever he’s ready he can come on by.
Tyra: Jason…I’m really sorry. No, I mean…Something like this shouldn’t happen to a good person like you.
Jason: Thank You.
Tyra: Bye.
Herc: Who in the hell was that?

Herc: Hey, when you’re done putting the newbie in that gay wheelchair, let me know.
Phil: You are talking to a gay man, Herc.
Herc: I don’t mean gay as in homosexual. I mean gay as in retarded.
Phil: Maybe I have a retarded son.
Herc: Is he gay?

Coach Taylor: You got a girlfriend?
Matt: Uh, no, sir.
Coach Taylor: Do you have someone you’re interested in?
Matt: Uh…sort, sort of
Coach Taylor: Sort of. Forget about sort of. You know what? Take her out. You understand me?
Matt: Sir
Coach Taylor: Dinner, movies, get her in the backseat of your car. I don’t care, whatever, but I’m telling you, you need to get loose out there. You’re wound up tighter then a rubber band out there, son.
Matt: Yes, sir
Coach Taylor: Good. So tomorrow, you come to practice loose and focused.
Matt: Loose and focused. Yes, sir
Coach Taylor: Get out of here.
Matt: Yes..yes, sir, sorry. Thanks coach.
Coach Taylor: You’re welcome.

Coach Taylor: I think I told that kid to get our daughter in the backseat of a car.

Lyla: What I’m saying is, I don’t feel anything for you, okay. That wasn’t even me that night. That was–I don’t even know who that was but it will never happen again. No one can ever know about it and it meant nothing. Do you understand me, Tim?
Tim: Yeah
Lyla: I hate myself for the other night. I just hope I don’t go straight to hell. I really do.

Lyla: What are you doing here?
Tim: Lyla…
Lyla: My father is right downstairs.
Tim: I know. Lyla…I can’t. I can’t stop thinking about you, Lyla. I can’t.
Lyla: No.

Coach Taylor: I gotta tell y’all something. I’m pissed at these boys from Arnett Mead. I know you’re pissed, too. Let’s get one thing straight, right now. This ends here. There’s not gonna be any retaliation. There’s gonna be no getting back. Rivalry week ends now. Tell you what we are gonna do, we’re going to take this energy that we have and we’re gonna take this anger that we have and we’re gonna use it to kick their ass where it counts, on the field. Is that understood?
Team: Yes sir
Coach Taylor: Who are we?
Team: Dillon Panthers
Coach Taylor: Who are we?
Team: (louder) Dillon Panthers!!
Coach Taylor: All right, let’s have a good practice now.

The football team is having a party and outside they are burning a “tiger” because they have a rivalry game against the Arnett Mead Tigers. Lyla Garrity, Tim Riggins, Matt Saracen, Landry Clarke are all at the party. Julie Taylor, the coach’s daughter shows up and a guy throws up on her shoes.
Tim has been staring at Lyla. Lyla’s friend thinks that Tim is staring at her and then she tells Lyla that she heard Tim dumped Tyra. Voodoo Tatom shows up at the party and people are calling out his nickname “Voodoo”.
Matt is still hanging out with Landry and someone comes up to Matt and tells him that he’s history; he “googled” Voodoo and he was the QB for his team that won State in Louisiana.
Voodoo Tatom changes the music on the Stereo. Smash gets upset and calls Voodoo “Doo-Doo”. Smash Williams tells Voodoo Tatom that if he ever touches him that he’ll break his fingers.
Students from Arnett Mead are breaking into the Panthers locker room; they are spray painting and vandalizing the locker room. The camera pans around the city. In the beauty salon some women are watching the local news as they talk about the rivalry football game. The mayor from Dillon has placed a wager on the game offering her prize cow.
At Coach Taylor’s house—Tami asks Coach Taylor what time he’ll be home on Friday and the coach says he has a scrimmage. Julie has a dance recital but the Coach forgot about it and upset Julie.
Jason is being lifted out of his bed and placed into a wheelchair. There is a guy that wheel’s in and he’s being sarcastic to Jason and Jason’s physical therapist. He’s Jason’s roommate Herc.
Coach Taylor shows up inside the locker room and he can see that it has been vandalized. The locker room is completely trashed. Coach Mac and Coach Taylor both say to each other “Rivalry”, “Tradition”.
Matt Saracen’s house—Matt is talking to his grandmother and tells her that he’s going to talk to his father. His grandmother asks him if his father is coming to dinner tonight. She has dementia and obviously doesn’t remember that Matt’s father is in Iraq.
Matt is at school talking to his father, Henry Saracen via Video Conference. Matt tells him about the game that he started. His father asked him if he’s going to start again the next time but Matt doesn’t know. Matt tells him about Voodoo Tatom and that he might start. Matt’s father says that it will take to pressure off of him if he’s not starting. Matt feels a little discouraged by his father’s response.
The Physical therapist wants him to try to use his hands and pick up his food. Jason says that he can’t use his hands. Jason then says that he’s tired as Lyla walks in the room to visit him. Lyla tells the therapist that he’s tired and the she sits down and starts to feed him.
Corey and Jason’s roommate Herc roll in on their wheelchairs. Corey has all his limps amputated and he shakes Lyla’s hand with his stump. He doesn’t want Lyla to be afraid to shake hands with him. Herc takes some food from Jason’s plate. Herc is aggravating Jason. Herc and Corey leave the room. Jason tells Lyla that he’s gotta get out of that room.
At school–Matt is watching Julie during her dance practice as he’s walking down the hallway towards the locker room. The players arrive in the locker room and Coach Taylor is already in there waiting for them to arrive. The place is a complete disaster. Coach Taylor says he’s pissed and he knows they are angry, too, but he doesn’t want any retaliation. They are going to start practice and Matt is asking where Voodoo is. Voodoo hasn’t shown up yet.
Matt is running practice as quarterback. Then Voodoo Tatom shows up on the field. The Coach gets in his face for being late for practice. Voodoo Tatum doesn’t say a word.
Voodoo gets his turn at Quarterback; he runs an option play and runs well down the field after making a fake. Voodoo is still at QB; he throws an accurate pass. Buddy Garrity is gloating and bragging at how good Voodoo is doing in practice. “Got my Voodoo working.”
Panther Radio is interviewing Voodoo Tatom and Buddy Garrity. They are talking about Voodoo living through Hurricane Katrina and being in the Superdome. They do not confirm whether he’s going to start the next game or not. Buddy says that they will have to ask Coach Taylor about whether or not Voodoo is starting.
At home Coach Taylor is listening to the radio. After hearing the broadcast he shuts the radio off and slams the knob. Tami Taylor tells coach not to let Voodoo mess with his mind. Tami says that he should start Matt Saracen but Coach Taylor just can’t see himself starting him right now. Julie walks in and asks about a party at the coach’s house. The Coach didn’t mention anything and the party is bigger then he wants to admit.
It’s a traditional rivalry party that they are completely unprepared for at the moment.
Matt Saracen comes home and his grandmother hasn’t taken her pills. The pills are sitting on the table the same way they were when he left in the morning. Matt wants her to take her pills right in front of him. She puts the pills in her mouth and then swallows the pills and drinks her juice. She saw Matt’s game tape and tells him that his feet are slow and that he needs to move them faster.
Lyla pulls Tim aside at school and tells him that she’s having feelings. She said that her feelings are coming from Jason. She tells Tim that she was emotional and that kissing him will never happen again and that it didn’t mean anything.
At football practice-Matt is running practice again as quarterback. Matt Saracen sees Julie Taylor walking on the field and he loses his concentration and messes up the play. Coach Taylor yells at him and tells him to play smart. Matt runs another play and then finally runs it correctly. Julie wants a headcount for the party to tell her mother. Coach Taylor says that it will be about 50ish…or 60ish, but he’s still not sure.
Coach Taylor tells Matt to stop messing up and to not let Voodoo mess up his concentration. He then asks Matt if he has a girlfriend. He tells him to ask her out. Coach Taylor tells Matt to loosen up; “he’s tighter then a rubber band.”
Matt goes home and he says hi to his grandma but there is no answer. He walks around the house looking for her. He doesn’t see her in the house at all and then he goes next door to see if she’s there. Matt is walking on the street looking for her.
Julie is with her mom and they are at the store buying food for the rivalry week dinner party. Some parents of the team members see them shopping at the store and mention that they will be showing up at the party as well. Tami starts to realize how big this party might be and it’s bothering her.
A police car pulls up to Matt and his Grandmother is in the back seat of the car. His Grandmother wondered off into a neighbor’s yard. Matt is walking her inside the house and his Grandmother is crying.
Matt is speaking with his father on the phone. He tells his dad that she has dementia.
Jason’s roommate, Herc rolls into his room. Jason is watching TV. Tyra comes into Jason’s room to visit. Tyra came by to say she’s sorry that Tim hasn’t visited; she says that Tim wants to be he can’t because he’s scared. Jason tells Tyra thanks for coming and whenever Tim is ready he can come and visit. Tyra tells Jason that he’s a good person and then kisses him on the cheek. Herc finds Tyra attractive and says, “who in the hell is that?”
During football practice Tim looks up at Lyla in the stands. Voodoo is running practice as QB. Tim makes a block and then looks up for Lyla and she’s gone.
At the Coaches house the doorbell rings and Tami answers it. There is a huge crowd of people that show up, more then they anticipated. Tami sends Julie back to the store to buy more items. Tami is close to panicking as the party begins.
Coach Taylor forgot to buy the ice and so they send Julie to buy the ice. Matt tries to talk to Julie but she’s in a hurry to go buy the ice and doesn’t stop to talk to him.
Buddy Garrity is talking and bragging about Voodoo Tatom. He’s asking the Coach who’s going to start next week. Coach Taylor is still avoiding the question; he gives a sarcastic answer and walks away.
Smash Williams has some information on the quarterback from Arnett Mead; they are going to do a little pay back for rivalry week.
Tami is hiding under the table, she’s cleaning up and she’s upset and she’s going to stay under the table until she can get herself together to fake a smile. Coach Taylor is still giving her a hard time even though he was fair to her about the party.
Matt asks Coach who’s going to start on Friday but the Coach won’t tell him either. Coach Taylor starts arguing with Tami when someone from Arnett Mead throws a brick through the window with a message.
Smash and Tim go to pick up Matt. Matt wasn’t going to go at first but Tim tells him to get into the car. They are going to get some payback for all the vandalism that they’ve received.
Smash drives up and finds the house and car. They all get out with baseball bats and begin to bash the quarterbacks Mustang. Matt has a lot of suppressed rage and is still swinging at the car even when they are trying to get away. They are yelling his name SARACEN, to get his attention because they want to drive off. The quarterback from Arnett Mead comes outside the house and can clearly see Matt’s face.
At the school, Coach Taylor walks into his wife’s guidance counselor office and apologizes by saying “I’m sorry that you’re mad at me”. Tami doesn’t accept that apology. Tami tries to tell Coach Taylor about her job and how hard it is to talk to kids instead of just yelling at them. Coach Taylor still doesn’t understand what he put her through with the surprise rivalry party and walks out of the office.
Herc goes into Jason’s room and asks him about his girlfriend. Jason gets upset and tells Herc that he doesn’t know anything about his girlfriend or his life. Herc tells him that he knows everything about his life. Herc tells Jason that people will get bored with sending him letters in 6 weeks and then in 3 months his girlfriend will tell him how different they are and then three maybe 4 months his parents will say that the stress of his condition will drive them to get a divorce..etc. As Herc is talking he is banging his wheelchair into Jason’s wheelchair. Jason gets upset and slaps the juice of the table as he yells at Herc. **Jason moved his hands.**
Coach Taylor is has the team running “stadiums”. They are running up and down the steps at the field. Coach Taylor knows about the retaliation and he’s upset and wants to know who went on the raid. No one will talk and they keep running.
The kids from Arnett Mead see Matt Saracen at his job Alamo Freeze. They ask Matt who else was there with him and Matt won’t talk. Matt throws the first punch and then they crowd around him and start punching and kicking him on the ground.
Coach Taylor is changing his clothes as he’s getting read for the recital. He tells Coach Mac he can’t go over any plays right now. Matt Saracen is in the hospital and calls Coach Taylor. Coach Taylor is taking Matt along to the dance recital after picking him up. Matt didn’t name any names and he tells the coach that he still won’t tell on everyone. Matt apologizes for asking about who’s going to start. Coach Taylor tells Matt that he’s a different kid from two weeks ago. He tells Matt that he can do anything that he puts his mind to.

Matt and Coach are at the dance recital. Tami is there and she’s surprised and happy to see Coach Taylor. She looks at Matt’s face and asks him if he’s alright. Coach Taylor is still on time to see Julie’s performance. Julie and her group get on stage and start their routine. Eric and Tami are proud and Matt is enjoying the performance because of his obvious attraction for Julie.
After the performance Coach Taylor tells Tami that he appreciates everything that she does and all the things that she puts up with. Julie sees Matt’s face and has a surprised reaction and asks him what happened. Matt tells her that he got beat up but that the song reminded him about a painter that he likes Jackson Pollock.
Coach Taylor sees Matt talking to his daughter and can see that Matt is attracted to her. He tells Tami, “I think I told that kid to get our daughter in the backseat of a car”
Tim is in Lyla’s room. Lyla walks in and Tim shuts the door. He tells her that he can’t stop thinking about her. Lyla starts kissing Tim and then they fall on her bed.
There is not game this Friday. Panther radio announcer Slamming Sammy Mead says it could be the biggest game of the season.
Coach Taylor and Tami are going to bed. Jason is going to bed. Matt is outside intensely throwing the football through the tire.
“Winning goes to the one who wants it most.”

Season 1 Episode 3 Quotes

Posted by Kaitlin with No Comments

Coach Taylor: Wind sprints, up and down the hill. Let’s go. Let’s go. If you think you’re champions because you wear the Panther uniform. You’re wrong! If you think you’re champions because they give you a piece of pie at the diner. You’re wrong! Champions don’t complain! Champions don’t give up! Let’s go Coach. Send’em out. Champions don’t give up! Champions don’t complain! Champions give 200%. You’re not champions until you’ve earned it!

Coach Taylor: Execution! Where the hell’s the execution out there?! Huh? My God, we ought to be beating these bums by 40 points! Riggins, you’re supposed to be one of the toughest guys in the district. They are handing your ass to you, son! You better get your head in the game. Smash…north, south, north, south. You want to dance with these boys out there; you invite them to the prom.

Lyla: Tim? Hey. Uh, we’re having a prayer meeting for Jason this afternoon. You wanna come?
Tim: What are we going to pray for, Lyla? A new spine for J?
Lyla: Tim, I know you don’t do anything you don’t want to do, and I guess that’s fine, but don’t insult me.

Tyra: You know, you’re such a big tough guy. You can’t even go see Jason in the hospital. I mean, damn it, Tim, grow a set, why don’t you. ‘Cause we both know that’s what this is all about.
Tim: Hey, Tyra. How’s Smash? Was he good? Did you have a nice time?
Tyra: Nothing happened. Not really. Besides, don’t pretend like you haven’t slept with half the Rally Girls.
Tim: We sure do have something special here, Tyra.
Tyra: Yeah, you know maybe you’re right. Maybe I am wasting my time. ‘Cause you are just another mediocre football player who’s gonna grow up to drink himself to death. Maybe we should just end this right now.
Tim: See you around then.
Tyra: I am serious, Tim. Are you listening to me? If I get in that car right now I’m never coming back. Do you understand?
Tim: I get it.
Tyra: That’s it? We’re breaking up for real and that’s all you have to say. That was great.

Live from Panther Stadium we are in the middle of a football game. Jason Street is watching the game with his mother on TV from his hospital bed. .
The Panthers have the ball with Matt Saracen as the quarterback. He’s calling plays. Matt fakes a run and throws up a pass. It is complete to Dolia the wide receiver. Dolia is running all the way for a touchdown but a defender catches him from behind and Dolia gets stripped at the 10 yard line and fumbles.
The camera cuts back and forth from the field and the locker room.
In the locker room–Coach Taylor is screaming at the team about execution.
Back on the field–the Panthers are getting tackled hard. (locker room)Coach is screaming at Tim Riggins. (on the field)“Smash” Williams is getting hit hard and gang tackled. (locker room)“Smash” Williams is talking back to the coach in the locker room.
The Panthers are losing 13 to 7 and time is running out in the 4th quarter. There is 15 seconds left; it is 3rd and Goal from the 9 yard line.
Jason Street is still watching the game from the hospital and he’s coaching Saracen from his bed. The ball is snapped; Matt fakes a handoff and then takes off running. Matt runs down the field and makes a couple of moves but he is tackled at the 1 yard line. No Touchdown. The Dillion Panthers lose the game.
In the locker room—Coach Taylor tells Saracen that he played a good game, but then he turns to the rest of the team and tells them “not good enough, not nearly good enough!” At the hospital–Jason Street looks out the window from his hospital bed and can see the stadium lights.
Tim Riggins house—Tim’s brother, Billy Riggins is putting ping pong balls in the house. Tim is drinking beer, watching TV and laying on the couch. There is a knock on the door and Billy says that Lyla Garrity is at the door but Tim is giving him the “I’m not home right now signal”. Billy answers the door and says that Tim is not at home. Lyla is speaking really loudly because she knows Tim is home and says that she is going to the hospital to visit Jason and that Tim should go visit him too.
Matt Saracen and Landry Clarke are in front of Matt’s house talking about the game. Matt’s quarterback billboard has been vandalized. Some kids in the neighborhood spray painted LOSER on it and Matt is trying to clean off the spray paint. Landry has a whacky theory that Matt’s grandmother could be a witch and put a spell on the Dillion Panthers. Matt’s grandmother comes out and tells him to water “the children” but she means the flowers. A car drives by with some kids taunting Matt. “Hey Loser!”
Jason is at the hospital trying to get himself to move his leg. Jason is having trouble getting his limbs to move and he wants to keep trying but the nurse tells him that he can try again the next day. Lyla Garrity comes into the room to visit with some flowers. Lyla is still optimistic about Jason getting his legs back and they are having a pancake supper benefit to raise money for his rehab. Lyla is kissing Jason and then she reaches down by his leg and can feel that he is wet. Jason has an accident on himself. The nurse is there to fix his catheter. Jason is embarrassed.
Tim is in his truck at a local convenient store. Mrs. Street sees Tim and Tim said that he’s been meaning to go visit Jason at the hospital. Mrs. Street tells him that he can still come over for Tuesday night dinner. She wants to know if he will be at the Pancake benefit. Tim just agrees with everything but he’s still struggling with what happened to Jason.
Coach Taylor and Julie Taylor, his daughter, are at a restaurant ordering food. Julie has a seat while her dad makes the order at the counter. A guy eating his food makes a comment to Julie. He asks her if she’s the coach’s daughter and then he asks Julie if they’ve started packing yet. He is sarcastically asking if she knows what happens when they lose football games. Coach Taylor gets upset and tells the guy if he has comments that he shouldn’t make it to his daughter. He then starts making comments to the coach. Coach Taylor gets upset and tells the guy that he’s going to walk away right now. The rude guy continues talking and says he won’t finish out the year as head coach. “You got no guts, you won’t finish out the year…..you won’t last one year”
Football practice–The team is running sprints. Coach Taylor is telling the team that they need to be faster because the team they are playing next is bigger then them. After running several sprints, “Smash” Williams stops running hard and starts talking to Coach Taylor, saying that the problem is the quarterback. A couple of other teammates agree with “Smash”. Coach gets upset and the number of sprints go from 5 more left to 10 and then up to 15.
Buddy Garrity as at the field watching practice. Mr. Dietz shows up to the practice and sits next to Buddy. Buddy wants to talk to Mr. Dietz about a displaced Katrina victim named Ray “Voodoo” Tatom. Mr. Dietz agrees to go with Buddy to meet Voodoo Tatom.
Lyla Garrity is having a conversation with her mother. Mrs. Garrity brings up the fact that it’s Lyla’s birthday tomorrow. Lyla is going to spend her birthday with Jason at the hospital. Lyla’s mother says that she’s at the hospital everyday and she’s concerned about all the time that she is spending at the hospital. Lyla says that she is marrying Jason one day and that her mother would do it for her dad. Mrs. Garrity thinks that Lyla might need to speak to someone about what’s going on. Lyla believes that Jason needs her right now and that Jason is going to come back from his injuries.
At the pancake benefit–The whole football team is there except for Tim Riggins. They are eating a lot of pancakes. Matt is with Landry Clarke, but then Matt gets some soy sausage and brings it over to the coach’s daughter Julie Taylor. Julie is leaving and she hands Matt her left over pancakes.
Buddy and the Boosters are talking about the Jason Street and Matt Saracen quarterback situation. One of the female boosters tells Tami that one of the last school counselors killed herself with pills, Tami Taylor is a new guidance counselor. Buddy and the Boosters want to make a move for the Katrina kid. The Boosters are trying to put pressure on the coach and Buddy wants the coach to look at the tapes of the Katrina kid playing football.
“Smash” sees Tyra Collete and she asks “Smash” if he’s seen Tim. He hasn’t seen Tim. Then “Smash” changes the subject and says let’s talk about us, Tyra says I don’t think so and walks away looking for Tim.
Tim hasn’t shown up to the benefit, he’s outside drinking and hitting beer cans with a golf club. Tyra is driving by and then pulls up next to Tim out on the road. He tells Tyra to leave him alone. Tyra is yelling at him for not going to see Jason, then Tim asks Tyra how was “Smash”. Tyra and Tim are arguing and Tyra says that they should end their relationship because he’s another mediocre football player that is going to drink himself to death. She gets in the car and threatens to break up with him. Tim doesn’t care anymore and he’s still swinging at beer cans with his golf club.
Coach Taylor, coach Mac and the boosters are watching game film on Ray Tatom. Coach Mac has seen the tape before at Buddy’s house.***Coach Mac has been spending time with Buddy without Coach Taylor.***
At the school–Tim is getting his school work handed to him from a Rally Girl and she wants to know if he and Tyra Collette broke up. Lyla sees Tim walking down the hall and asks him if he wants to meet after school because they are going to have a prayer meeting for Jason. Tim says, what are they going to pray for, a new spine?
Matt sees his new guidance counselor Tami Taylor, the coach’s wife, and says he needs to drop Pre-Calculus so he can go to morning practice. Tami’s a little concerned about Matt’s academics and advises him to take the course at some point. She’s asking him how he’s doing with his dad being in Iraq and everything. Matt is talking to her about his grandmother and how he has to help take care of her. Matt knows about the Katrina refugee, a quarterback from New Orleans that might be coming onto the team. Matt is stressed out about that. Tami had no idea about the kid from New Orleans, it’s the first time the Coach’s wife has heard about it.
Football practice—Tim Riggins is running drills. Tim’s not running with enthusiasm anymore. Coach Taylor pulls Tim aside. He tells Tim to give 110% every time not when he feels like it. He tells Tim to do the drill again. Tim takes off his helmet and walks off the field. Coach Mac tells Coach Taylor that Tim’s been watching the film when Jason Street got hurt and that he might be blaming himself for the hit.
Buddy Garrity is telling Coach Taylor that he saw Tim walk off the field and back in the old days that would’ve never happened. Buddy wants to take the Coach over to see the Katrina refugee, Ray Tatom.
When they arrive to meet with Ray Tatom, there is another coach coming out of a hotel room. Ray Tatom and his family are in the hotel room. Buddy tells them that they can give them housing and Mr. Tatom a new job. The might be able to arrange a fund from some of the businesses. He’s selling the town of Dillion and a guarantee to start for the team. Coach Taylor doesn’t agree with anything that Buddy has suggested. Coach Taylor starts to talk to Voodoo himself and tells him that the Dillion Panthers are the #1 team in Texas and asks him if he wants to play college and pro football. Coach sells his program based on the fact that they have the best team and will have a long season. Coach Taylor politely thanks Ray Tatom and his family for meeting with him and then leaves.
The Garrity’s are arguing about talking to Lyla and about how she’s dealing with Jason Street. Lyla’s mother is concerned about her and how preoccupied with Jason she is. Lyla is overhearing their conversation.
Coach Taylor comes home from practice and then Tami tells him she didn’t know they were getting a new quarterback from New Orleans. Tami tells coach that Matt Saracen was stressed out and worried about the new quarterback. Coach Taylor is being sarcastic and is upset. He’s telling Tami that they need to win.
“Smash” Williams is on TV getting interviewed. “Smash” is telling the reporter that he has an opinion about the coach but won’t say it, and then he tells the interviewer that they just need to win. After watching the interview, Coach Taylor calls Coach Mac and he tells Mac to get all the players to meet him at the field house in a ½ an hour.
Matt Saracen gets a call….all the other football players start to get a phone call. Tim Riggins gets a call, there is a knock on Smash’s door and it’s Coach Taylor. Coach Taylor is picking “Smash” up himself.
The football team is getting on a school bus. They have no idea where they are going or what they will be doing. When they finally reach there destination, they all get off the bus.
Coach Mac and Coach Taylor have the team running wind sprints up and down a hill. It starts to rain on them and they continue to run. Coach Taylor begins to yell at them while Coach Mac blows the whistle. Coach Taylor yells, “Champions don’t complain…..champions don’t give up!!” “You’re not champions until you’ve earned it!!”
During a small break between wind sprints Smash Williams begins to yell, “Clear eyes….full hearts….can’t lose” The rest of the team starts to chant (Clear eyes, full hearts can’t lose) Coach Mac blows the whistle and they continue running wind sprints.
At the hospital with Jason Street, Lyla Garrity visits him for her birthday. She says that it is just a little hiccup and that he has to have faith. She believes that in one year he’ll be back on track. Jason says, “His legs are never going to get better…ever.” He’s telling Lyla that she’s not helping him and that she needs to stop pretending. Every night when he goes to sleep he dreams he will walk again and then when he wakes up he can’t walk. He tells Lyla that they are not getting married and then he yells at her and tells her to get out. Lyla says she’ll be back tomorrow when he gets transferred to the rehab facility.
The kids are getting back on the bus. Coach stops Tim and tells him that what happened to Jason was not his fault. Coach is telling Tim to be smart and then he warns him about walking out on practice and threatens to kick him off the team if he walks off again. Coach Taylor tells Tim that he owes him a practice. Coach won’t let Tim on the bus and makes Tim walk home.
Tim is walking home and Lyla can see him walking on the side of the street. Lyla stops to pick up Tim but he doesn’t take the ride. Lyla starts to drive away and then stops again for Tim. Lyla then gets out and asks him if he’s drunk again. Tim says that he will be drunk soon enough. Lyla is upset with Tim and doesn’t understand why he won’t go and visit Jason. She hits him and says that Jason asks for him all the time. Lyla is extremely upset and starts crying and hitting Tim because she knows that Jason is never going to walk again. Tim holds Lyla while she is crying and then they start to kiss.
Coach Taylor comes home at three in the morning and gets in bed. His wife asks him where he has been and Coach Taylor says, “Practice”.
The next day Jason is getting read to be transferred to the rehab facility. The nurses are dressing him. Lyla shows up as they get Jason into the wheelchair. Jason apologizes about what he said to her and tells Lyla that he loves her. Mr. Street puts the signed football (signed by the football team) in Jason’s hands.
Football practice—They are running normal practice with Matt as the quarterback.
Everyone is practicing hard, the team is unified after the run they had the night before.
Buddy Garrity shows up with Ray “Voodoo” Tatom in street clothes. Everyone stops practicing and is staring at the new person on the football field. Coach Taylor shakes Ray Tatom’s hand. Coach Taylor yells at everyone to continue practicing. Ray “Voodoo” Tatom walks off the field.

Season 1 Episode 2 Quotes

Posted by Kaitlin with No Comments

Tyra: What are you, a shrink?
Smash’s Mother: Oh, I’d be nice. I work at Planned Parenthood. You probably haven’t seen the last of me.

Coach Taylor: I’ll tell you somethin’. I know you didn’t want me to step foot in your house tonight. I’ll tell you somethin’ else and don’t you ever forget this. You should feel proud. You should feel real proud.
Matt: Yes, sir.
Coach Taylor: This is all yours for the takin’. Depends on how much you want it. It’s yours for the takin’. The other night you played for a few minutes. Tomorrow, four quarters. You can’t be distracted by anything. You’re gonna have a lot of distractions. You’re gonna have our fans, their fans. You got the band. You got the cheerleaders with their pretty young-shaped legs bouncing up and down. You got a job to do. Nothing else.

Smash: I seen my granddaddy make better blocks playing checkers. Tim: Yeah, if you could run as fast as you talk we’d probably score every play. That’s fact.
Smash: Look, you got something; you got something to say to me. Tim: You need to start getting behind my blocks, right behind me. I can’t keep doing all this…

Coach Taylor: Hey
Jason: Hey, Coach
Coach Taylor: How you feeling?
Jason: Well, I’m, uh, not feeling too much right now…
