SUNDAY
The camera pans around the city and then into churches.
The camera goes into a Black church with “Smash” Williams and family. The congregation is praying for Jason Street. The camera then goes into a White church where the congregation is also praying for Jason Street to get better.
Tim Riggins is in the back of a pick-up truck with his brother Billy Riggins shooting off a rifle. Tim’s brother Billy tells him that he saw the hit and that Jason may never walk again.
Matt Saracen is tossing the ball around outside after the sermon is over. Buddy Garrity is questioning the Coach about what they are going to do with Jason Street out and with Matt in as the quarterback.
Coach Taylor calls Matt aside and tells him that they have a lot of work to do.
MONDAY
Lyla Garrity is at the hospital visiting Jason Street. She brings up the name Nathan Forman. Nathan is a guy that had a similar injury to Jason and he recovered from it. She looked it up on the internet. She’s speaking to a doctor about Nathan but that Doctor is not Jason’s he’s in oncology (Cancer treatment). She brought in a poster signed by all the cheerleaders and rally girls and the Doctor helps her tape it up. She’s trying to cheer Jason up. She tells him she loves him and kisses him.
Panther Radio is talking about Matt Saracen and doesn’t even pronounce his name correctly. “Anyone can throw one nice pass”. They are criticizing Matt on the radio.
Coach Taylor is meeting with the team. Coach is telling the team that they have a specialist from Houston looking at Jason. As far as football they still have a game on Friday and a lot of work to do.
Practice- Matt Saracen is running the offense. Matt is hesitating and not throwing the ball on time. The coaches are yelling at Matt “4 seconds for a 5 step drop”. Matt throws an interception in practice. The coaches are yelling at him. Matt is having problems with the timing patterns and continues to throw interceptions. Coach Taylor is drilling into Matt that he needs to know the offense. “You need to know this offense so well that your children are gonna know this offense in their own DNA”
Tami Taylor is talking to her daughter (Julie Taylor) about going to a Book Club meeting with some of the women in the town. Julie warns her about going to the Book Club.
Coach Taylor is watching game tape. He kisses his wife and tells her that he loves her.
Tim Riggins is watching game tape and he’s watching the hit that Jason Street made to hurt himself over and over again. Tim begins to cry. (Jason and Tim are really good friends)
Tami Taylor is at the book club having a few drinks and talking. The subject changes and the wives are all talking about football to her. They are telling Tami that they should run with “Smash” Williams more.
At the neighborhood food hangout–”Smash” Williams is out sitting in a booth talking to a few girls. A strange girl is crying over Jason Street. Tyra Collette gets annoyed with the girl and says she doesn’t even know Jason Street so she should stop crying.
“Smash” is saying that someone needs to take control of the team now that Jason has gone down. Matt Saracen is approached by a Rally Girl. She says “I’m yours”. Now that Matt is first string he gets a rally girl. She offers to make him a cake. Matt is stumbling over his words and just agrees with what she says. Landry Clarke is noticing their change in status on campus. Matt is trying not to be distracted by girls. Matt feels guilty about Jason being in the hospital. Landry says they only have about 4-5 weeks to enjoy this change before Jason comes back.
“Smash” Williams says he will be the new leader. He says just because Street went down doesn’t mean that they stop playing. He’s rallying his table of teammates around him.
Tim gets upset overhearing “Smash” talking about taking over for Jason. Tim challenges “Smash” and tells him to get out of Street’s booth. Tim gives him a long stare and then walks away. Then he turns around and throws a bottle at “Smash” Williams.
TUESDAY
Back at Coach Taylor’s house–His wife (Tami) is on the phone exaggerating how happy she was at the book club meeting and exaggerating a Southern accent. Tami talked herself into making 200 rice krispie treats. The Air Conditioner in the house is broken. Coach is in the backyard trying to fix the Air Conditioner. Tami says that it might be time for her to get a new job.
Coach Taylor is at Applebee’s eating with Boosters and they are all talking about the game. They are teasing Matt Saracen and saying that he can not throw the ball well. They are suggesting that they run the ball. Buddy Garrity finishes by saying that what it takes on Friday nights are a “big ole’ W.”
Football Practice-Matt is continuing to struggle. He keeps throwing interceptions. The other coach thinks they need to run some more running plays. They run a running play in practice. Tim purposely doesn’t block and “Smash” gets tackled hard. “Smash” and Tim get into a shoving match. The coaches have to separate them.
“Smash” sees Tyra Collette after practice and he’s telling her that her boyfriend (Tim Riggins) is a piece of work. Tyra says she wouldn’t call him her boyfriend. “Smash” gives her a look.
At “Smash” William’s house–Mrs. Williams comes home from the store with groceries and sees “Smash” making out with Tyra on her sofa. Mrs. Williams gets upset at “Smash” about getting into a fight in practice and messing with a white girl. Mrs. Williams then walks Tyra out of the house and doesn’t offer her a ride home.
At the hospital the Coach drops off a Football signed by the team. Jason says that he really can’t move anything. Jason wants to know if Tim signed the football. (Tim still hasn’t come in to visit Jason) The Coach gets emotional and then says that he’s saving his spot for him. Jason asks about Saracen. Coach Taylor says he’s throwing like a girl but he’s doing fine. Jason is laughing and says that he always liked that kid. Jason says he’s really creative and that he’s a good kid and that they should free him up on the field and he might make things happen. “You’re what makes guys like me wanna coach” is what the Coach says to him. Jason says he’s sorry for letting him down and the team down. The Coach tells Jason that he didn’t let him down. Jason begins to cry.
WEDNESDAY
Landry and Matt are talking and Landry is saying that Matt can not compare himself to Jason Street. It’s like comparing Landry’s band to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Landry is trying to give Matt advice on what to day during his interview. He tells him he can say anything, “the weirder you are the better”.
Matt is being interviewed and he uses the Red Hot Chili Peppers reference. Matt says everyone likes the Red Hot Chili Peppers. So the interviewer says “If Jason is the Red Hot Chili Peppers, then what are you?” Matt says he doesn’t know who he is.
Tim is walking on the track and Lyla Garrity starts talking to him. She tells him that Jason has been asking about him. Lyla says that Jason is doing well. She wants to know if Tim is going to visit him. She tells Tim that Jason might start getting offended if he doesn’t go and see him soon.
The Doctors are telling Jason that the fracture is low enough that he will still be able to use his arms and hands. The he asks the Doctors if he’ll be able to walk again. His mother tries to talk to him about physical therapy but Jason insists on hearing the truth from the Doctor.
Tami Taylor is out to dinner with her husband Coach Taylor. Coach Taylor sits down at the table still wearing his hat. Tami asks him to take his hat off. Tami tells him that it will cost $3,000 to get a new Air Conditioner because the old one is broken. Tami has a job as a new Guidance Counselor at the High School. Coach is not completely ok with Tami having a job at the school; during their conversation the hospital calls the Coach about Jason.
THURSDAY
In the Locker Room–The team is gathered and the Coach walks in. The Coach tells the team that Jason is paralyzed. And that he will regain the use of his upper body but not the use of his legs. Tim walks out of the meeting. Everyone is hit hard by the news.
Landry Clarke is going over plays with Matt while he’s at his job. Matt is bussing tables while Landry is drilling him. Matt gets some of the plays right but he’s getting some of the plays wrong too. There is a customer waiting for his order he complains about not getting his fries. Matt gets his order.
At the hospital- Jason Street is watching a movie with Lyla Garrity. Jason tells Lyla about his “news”. Jason tells her that it would take a miracle for him to walk again. Lyla isn’t listening and believes that Jason with be ok. She says a prayer with him.
The Coach is watching game film. His wife Tami Taylor comes in and hands him a drink. The Coach says that Matt Saracen isn’t ready to play. Coach Taylor says that the town expects to win State but he’s not sure if they will win another game. Tami tells him that he can mold Matt. Coach Taylor feels like the only reason why he became the Head Coach was because of Jason Street and that he doesn’t have enough time to get Matt ready. Tami keeps encouraging him and tells him that she believes in him.
The Coach goes over to Matt’s house. Matt tells his grandmother to go into another room. Coach Taylor is at the door. The Coach comes into the house, Matt wanted to talk outside. Ms. Saracen shakes the Coach’s hand and says that she’s proud of Matt. Coach says he wants to borrow Matt for about an hour.
Coach is driving Matt to the football field. When they get there he tells Matt that when he was playing he couldn’t sleep before a football game. (We learn that Matt’s dad is over in Iraq.) Coach tells Matt that he should feel proud and not ashamed of himself. He tells Matt that he can’t be distracted by anything, he will have a lot of distractions but he has a job to do, nothing else.
The speakers have crowd noise. The Coach gives Matt the football and has him calling plays over the speaker noise. He has Matt yelling his plays over the noise. “Who do you play for?” “How much do you want it?” Coach is trying to build confidence in Matt.
FRIDAY
Coach Taylor is talking to Buddy Garrity (Booster of the Year). He’s pressuring Coach Taylor about the game. He says the team and the town needs a “W”, especially after what happened to Jason Street. Buddy exaggerates and says that if they lose this game the town will be in turmoil, “this team, this town needs a ‘W’”
Matt gets his cake on game day from his Rally Girl. She gives him a little kiss.
Tim gets a package from his Rally Girl and gives her a big passionate kiss. Lyla is with Jason Street at the hospital feeding him a cookie.
The camera pans around the city and business are closed. The team is getting dressed and so are the cheerleaders. Everyone is getting ready for the game.
The team is in the locker room getting ready to go out and play. Coach Taylor gives a speech. He tells them that the team is not about one player but about all of them. He says that some of them might be pissed off and that football is a good channel for that energy. In order to overcome there lose it will take not one man but every single one of them together. The team says a pray and mentions Jason Street in the pray. Clear Eyes, Full Hearts…Can’t Lose. CAN’T LOSE!!!
The team is fired up and they all go out of the locker room except for Matt. The coach asks Matt if he is ready for this. Matt says he’s ready.
He asks Matt when he threw the pass last week was his eyes opened or not. Matt said that his eyes were wide open.
The game is starting and the ball is kicked off.
