In her last big role in “The Great Debaters,” Jurnee Smollett played a smart high schooler who was dedicated to improving herself by hitting the books. But now, Smollett is playing a character who is interested in another kind of hit altogether — hits on the football field.

Smolett is one of the new additions to the cast of the football drama, which will air its fourth season this year on NBC (episodes are currently airing on DirectTV). The young actress is thrilled with playing Jess Merriweather, the daughter of an ex-football player who knows more about football than her fellow male classmates.

“Being on this show has been better than I ever could have imagined,” said Smolett, whose past credits include several guest spots on series such as “Grey’s Anatomy” and “House” as well as the film “Eve’s Bayou.”

She had been a fan of the series before being cast and was impressed with the naturalness of the dialogue and the character interactions. “It didn’t feel like I was watching a TV show,” she said. “The dialogue never seemed forced.”

Black Book Magazine Interviews Taylor Kitsch

Taylor Kitsch: The New Action Hero Any day now, Taylor Kitsch will cut his hair. To transform into the title character in John Carter of MarsWall-E director Andrew Stanton’s first live-action feature, based on Tarzan creator Edgar Rice Burrough’s sci-fi novels about a Civil War veteran’s adventures on the Red Planet—the 28-year-old actor, who plays the dreamy, brooding, beer-drinking, football-playing Tim Riggins on NBC’s cult drama Friday Night Lights, will lop off his locks for the first time since he was 19. “Hopefully, it’s a 10-year job,” Kitsch says of the potential franchise, which co-stars Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morton and Thomas Haden Church.

Even though the motorcycle-riding actor has spent four seasons playing high-level pigskin on TV, and was a serious hockey player in college (it was only after he busted his knee that he took up acting), the intense preparation leading up to John Carter exceeds anything he’s done before. It includes sword training, gun fighting, horseback riding and seven-hour cram sessions on the Civil War. And while learning to fence with four-armed giant green Martians might not be every actor’s idea of the method, Kitsch uses physicality as entrée into psyche. “It makes it a bit easier,” he says. “I have to look like this, walk like this. I have to lose this much weight. I’ll know this inside out. Then I work on the mental state.”

mandela

Nelson Mandela created this collection of African folktales as a way of providing a fantastic catalog of fables, but also to create a way to raise money for children in South Africa that have been orphaned or effected by HIV/AIDS. This new audio recording features celebrities reading Mandela’s choices, and includes one narration by Friday Night Lights’ Jurnee Smollett.

TVSquad Review: Friday Night Lights

Posted by Amy with 1 Comment

(S04E07) Friday Night Lights is a show that’s as much about subtle touches as it is about bone-crunching hits on the football field. This episode was all about pain, but not just the kind that requires a doctor’s touch. Julie felt it, as did Landry, Becky, Vince and Tim in their own ways.

For a change of pace, Tami wasn’t getting the fuzzy end of the lollipop, and for Coach Taylor, things were looking up even though the sheriff was snooping around the locker of one of his players. And if you’re wondering what happened after Matt left Dillon last week, read on.

The pain that Julie felt was the result of Matt’s abrupt departure. What made it even harder to take was that after three years, Matt had left and not bothered to call her. He contacted his family, but nothing for Julie. Throwing herself into Academic Smackdown turned out to be therapeutic. In fact, the question about Thomas Wolf’s novels seemed like a plant.
