“Parenthood” Stars Love FNL and Jason Katims

Posted by Kaitlin with No Comments

On Tuesday March 2, NBC will finally give fans a reason to tune into the network at 10PM. That reason: PARENTHOOD. The ensemble drama (starring Lauren Graham!) from Ron Howard (ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT) and Jason Katims (FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS) that chronicles the very large, very colourful and very imperfect Braverman family. One of whom, Julie Braverman, a successful corporate attorney and not-so-successful Mom played by the delightful Erika Christensen (Traffic) was kind enough to take some time during the recent Television Critics Association Press Tour to discuss what it’s like playing a career driven mom, what brought her back to television and how she successfully managed to avoid the pitfalls of young Hollywood.

Did the fact that Jason Katims was the man behind the genius that is FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHT play a role in you signing on to the series?
Absolutely. I’m a huge fan of Jason Katims. Myself [and co-stars] Dax Shepard and Sarah Ramos are obsessed with FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS. Seriously. Greatest show ever. During the huge first wave of press we did for PARENTHOOD our answer to every question was, “Don’t worry about PARENTHOOD, just watch FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS.” You can imagine the security I feel knowing that he [Katims] is writing my show.

Jurnee Smollett/Jess Joins Cast of CBS’ “Defenders”

Posted by Kaitlin with No Comments

Jurnee-SmollettImage Credit: Rick Stephens/PR PhotosCBS has recruited Friday Night Lights‘ Jurnee Smollett (Jess) to join the cast of its hour-long legal drama, Defenders, as a new associate by the name of Lisa, sources confirm to me exclusively.

Defenders centers around two charismatic and fiery Las Vegas defense attorneys who go to the mat for their clients. As previously reported, Jim Belushi has been cast as one of the two leads. Casting continues for the other role.

Smollett is expected to shoot the Defenders pilot before returning to Austin in April to begin work on FNL’s fifth and (sigh) final season.

Forbes Talks to FNL Executive Producer Jason Katims

Posted by Kaitlin with No Comments

Friday Night Lights has the adoration of critics, but it has struggled to find a broad enough audience for network TV. What lessons from that experience can you apply here?

The frustrating thing about Friday Night Lights is I know a lot more people would respond to the show if they saw it. The most common response when I tell people I work on FNL is, “Oh, I hear that’s a great show.” I’ve heard that so many times and it’s frustrating only because I love the show so much. That said, I wish I had the answer to why. Everybody from NBC to DirecTV ( DTV news people ) has tried to get the word out there that it’s a football show but you don’t have to like football to like the show and that it’s as much for–if not more for–women than it is for men. I think there might have been some things that were inherent to the show that were just keeping people from sampling it. So will that same thing happen with Parenthood? I don’t know yet. All I can do is try to make a show that’s compelling and hope that this is a world they want to be a part of for an hour each week.

Posted by Kaitlin with No Comments

The First Avenger: Captain America” director Joe Johnston spoke about casting Steve Rogers earlier this month, saying that a casting decision was “weeks away.” Well, weeks have passed, February is almost over and it appears the role has been narrowed down to five.

According to Deadline Hollywood, the five front-runners for the role of Captain America are Chace Crawford (”Gossip Girl”), John Krasinski (”The Office”), Scott Porter (”Friday Night Lights”), Mike Vogel (”Cloverfield”) and Michael Cassidy (”Smallville”).

“Greenlit” To Debut At SXSW Featuring Zach Gilford

Posted by Kaitlin with No Comments

Synopsis of ‘Greenlit’ from SXSW Film site: Movie people are legendarily liberal and left leaning, particularly when it comes to the environment. Greenlit puts their commitment to the test as filmmaker Miranda Bailey (executive producer of The Squid and the Whale) follows the production of The River Why, starring Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights) as it attempts to keep an environmentally friendly set thanks to the supervision of a “green” consultant. What starts off with great enthusiasm quickly devolves in this insightful and hilarious film.

Landry Makes BuddyTV’s List of Cutest TV Guy Geeks

Posted by Kaitlin with 1 Comment

#15 Landry Clarke, Friday Night Lights

There aren’t a lot of things dorkier than an off-beat kid in a Christian metal band, even one who plays high school football, but Landry’s quirky style works for him, especially considering the level of grade-A hotties he’s hooked up with on the show.
