EW’s Ausiello Predicts Actor in a Drama Emmy Race
Posted by Kaitlin with 7 Comments
OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A DRAMA
Jon Hamm (Mad Men)
Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights)
Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad)
Hugh Laurie (House M.D.)
Michael C. Hall (Dexter)
Matthew Fox (Lost)
The Frontrunner: Cranston and Chandler (tie). Cranston could well earn his third consecutive trophy, but the Academy has three years of snubs to atone for where Chandler is concerned.
The Dark Horse: Laurie. If he submits last season’s two-hour asylum-set opener — and he’d be a dummy not to — the winless thesp could be tough to beat.
Most Egregious Snub: Timothy Olyphant (Justified). Perhaps voters thought… Maybe they didn’t consider… I guess it’s possible they failed to… Nope, I got nothin’.
Other Notable Omissions: Peter Krause (Parenthood), Andy Whitfield (Spartacus: Blood and Sand), and Kiefer Sutherland (24).

Well, I just hope that when he gets around to the supporting actor category, he points out what a snub it is that Zack Gilford wasn’t nominated. I’m thrilled that Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler have been nominated, but still steamed about Zack Gilford and the show, which should have been nominated for best drama. Grrrr.
I, too, sincerely wish Zach and the show had been nominated in their respective categories. (I’m not certain Zach would have been in the supporting actor category. He is credited as a Guest Star in the opening credits for Season 4 in the episodes he appears … and that was a huge, wide open category this season. Brad Leland, Steve Harris, and some others are also credited as Guest Stars.)
The Emmys are very political. I know Connie Britton had been previously submitted in both the Lead and Supporting Actress categories to gain some traction. Crediting relatively ‘unknown’ Zach as a Guest Star was a gamble I’m sure was not his decision.
It’s a miracle Kyle and Connie broke through the whatever barrier was keeping them from being previously nominated. And now that they have broken through, I’d really like to see both of them take the statues home … because they both deserve to win. They have also both publicly shared their nominations with the cast, and crew … stating it is a team effort to make FNLs.
And this is why I have so little respect for the Emmy awards, and award shows in general — it is not about the work, not about the craft and art, but about the politics.
Homicide never won (and I think was never even nominated) for best show… And how bloody long did it take for Andre Braugher to win for best actor?! He didn’t get nominated until he left the show… (nice to see him in there again this year, btw)
Friday Night Lights is without a doubt the best written and best made, and simply BEST show on tv right now, and has been since it first premiered. And it just kills me that it is not getting the credit (True Blood was nominated but FNL wasn’t?!).
There should be some sort of award around that is honestly about the work…
The Emmys are a double edge sword. They are respected within the industry, and yes, they are political. The 4 nominations are a big feather in FNLs cap … and for Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton. They will now forever be known as Emmy nominees.
They’ve had to wait many, many years for this opportunity. I hope they both win.
FNLs has one more season to be nominated. Here’s hoping for next year.
At least the New York Times has commented on the injustice…
“In the drama category, meanwhile, a terrible crime was committed, for the fourth season in a row. That’s the span during which “Friday Night Lights” has been, over all, the best drama on television, and has not drawn a single nomination for the best-drama award. Apparently the stigma of being a show about the relatively ordinary lives of Texans obsessed with high school football is still too much to overcome.”
