GQ Chats with Friday Night Lights’ Jurnee Smollett

Posted by Kaitlin with No Comments

Jurnee Smollett grew up in a big family full of actors, so her childhood was spent on sets with siblings Jake, Jojo, Jussie, Jocqui, and Jazz. (That is, when she wasn’t performing herself alongside the Olsen twins on Full House and starring in the admired indie film Eve’s Bayou). Now 24, Smollett has a plum role as a central character on the breathlessly beloved TV series Friday Night Lights, now in its final season on DIRECTV. And she also has a regular gig on a new CBS drama called The Defenders. She spoke with GQ about her busy schedule, her farewell to FNL, and her famous childhood cheerleader, Samuel L. Jackson.

Describe what it was like being there for the end of Friday Night Lights.
It was an honor to be a part of a show that I think is going to go down as one of the greatest of all time. The last days, everyone was emotional but also trying to give it their best. The cast and crew were really a family; most of the crew had been with the show for every single season. [Last season] was just touching on the surface of who my character was. We had a certain amount of patience to build her, then season five you get to see her be a part of the football team. It’s nice: the show has never touched upon that storyline of a girl who is so passionate about football—who knows more about the game than a lot of guys—but is stuck in her body as a girl. It’s a hard truth she has to face. That’s the kind of stuff I love, the characters who don’t fit in their skin.

L.A. Times Discusses What Is and Isn’t Working in Season 5

Posted by Kaitlin with 3 Comments

As “Friday Night Lights” moves into the meat of its final, 13-episode season, this week’s Show Tracker will take a slightly different format. Below is a look at some of this season’s major storylines, and what has — and hasn’t — been working.

Becky’s domestic troubles: Story developments like the one that greeted Madison Burge’s Becky give “Friday Night Lights” fans near-unconditional faith in writers, cast and producers to work their way out of any potentially tired plot. So far this season, viewers have seen Becky hurt, wounded and unwanted just about everywhere she goes. Even when she’s with her peers and seemingly leading a dance-planning committee, all of Becky’s ideas are tossed aside for “Texas Luau.”

It was an unexpected “Friday Night Lights” veteran who came to the rescue: Stacey Oristano’s Mindy Collette. For much of five seasons, Mindy has been on the periphery, keeping Derek Phillips’ Billy Riggins in check or offering some comic relief. Seeing the stripper-turned-housewife fight off her baby fat with some aggressive Jazzercise-like moves, all while giving Becky the cold shoulder, was an amusingly colorful snapshot of suburban life.

As was the heart-to-heart Becky and Mindy would have when Mindy broke the news that her boss at the Landing Strip believed her behind was too large to be granted any night shifts. Working the day shift, Mindy said, would mean dancing to farmers, and “farmers are the worst tippers.” It was Becky who rose to the occasion with some negotiating advice, and in one of the most oddly sentimental scenes in the show’s history, reminded Mindy that her regular customers “probably miss you.” A visibly touched Mindy responded with a weary “thank you.

Chicago Tribune Reports on Matt Lauria’s “Chicago Code”

Posted by Kaitlin with No Comments

Guy Ferland, the director, and Jason Clarke, the lead actor, stand close to each other in an elevated train car. The car is part of a train to nowhere, circling the Loop all morning solely for the purposes of the television series that Ferland, Clarke and more than 200 others are filming this crisp November morning.

Clarke, an Australian playing veteran Chicago cop Jarek Wysocki, had entered the car, prop gun drawn, just behind Matt Lauria, the former “Friday Night Lights” star playing Clarke’s greener, more cerebral partner, both chasing a bank robber who has fled onto the Quincy “L” platform in the southwest corner of the Loop.

“We are on the Brown Line traveling toward LaSalle and Van Buren, and we need this train stopped right now,” Lauria says breathlessly into his walkie-talkie. Whatever it will end up doing in the scene, the train in real life kept going.

EW’s Ken Tucker Reviews 5.04 “Keep Looking”

Posted by Kaitlin with 1 Comment

Few dramas can make an absorbing hour out of its characters trying to avoid drama, but Friday Night Lights pulled it off this week.

Those of us clamoring for a Buddy Garrity story line got it this week, although it may not have been the Buddy story we wanted. Picking up on last week’s news from the divorced home-front that Buddy, Jr., had become too much for his mom to handle, the sullen youth was shipped back to Dillon for a paternal tune-up.
