EW: ‘Friday Night Lights’ character Joe McCoy belongs in the TV Villains Hall of Fame

Posted by Amy with No Comments

Clear-eyed, full-hearted fans of Friday Night Lights have learned the face of pure evil, and its name is Joe McCoy. Played by actor D.W. Moffett, the wealthy father of the obnoxious star quarterback at West Dillon High is the biggest Texas villain since J.R. Ewing. He engineered Coach Taylor’s dismissal from the Panthers. He usurped Buddy as the head of the boosters. He’s even got his sights set on retribution against Tami. Ugly stuff. But it’s the gleeful way that he does his Machiavellian deeds that has me hurling nonsensicals at the TV screen before I can even put a dent in my Friday-night box-o-wine. His smug smile. His mirrored shades. I loathe him. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to separate the actor from the character. Moffett could go on to play Albert Schweitzer in some movie, and I’d curse his character through gritted teeth. (Reverence for life, my a–!)

Friday Night Lights Makes Entertainment Weekly’s Must List

Posted by Kaitlin with No Comments

Both postings below are from Entertainment Weekly’s October 30th issue (with the Glee cast on the front cover).

The Must List: The Top 10 Things We Love This Week:

#3 FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS ON DIRECTV: We’re too distracted by Taylor Kitsch’s return to be sad that Coach (Kyle Chandler) and his missus (Connie Britton) are not at rival schools.

What to Watch: Must Watch of the Week:

Season Premiere of Friday Night Lights on October 28th 9-10pm DirecTV Ch. 101

By Ken Tucker

Can Kyle Chandler’s Coach Taylor lead his new team, the East Dillon Lions, to victory? Perhaps more importantly, can Friday Night Lights lure more viewers into watching this superlative series? Starting its fourth season this week on DIRECTV (NBC will air these episodes in 2010),FNL is multitasking: Principal Tami (Connie Britton) is taking heat for the high school redistricting, her husband is recruiting new team members (including a troubled lad played by Michael B. Jordan), and the mighty Tim Riggins (Taylor Kitsch) struggles with college life. Will we care as much about the Dillon Panthers when D.W. Moffett’s great bad guy Joe McCoy is running them? And will FNL’s high quality be both maintained and finally rewarded with the Emmys the show deserves?
