Prex.com Previews Cowboy and Indian’s Album This Fall

Jesse Plemons may have killed a man on NBC as Landry Clarke, the nerdy comic relief-turned-murderer in Friday Night Lights‘ worst plot twist, but he’s since risen from his roots on the now-defunct (though excellent) TV show to play a different role: folk singer.  Plemons is part of a folk crew, calledCowboy and Indian, whose outfits are something to shake an eyebrow at and whose gorgeous vocal harmonies and down-south fever are enough to start you square dancing.

And no, Friday Night Lights fans, Cowboy and Indian don’t sound anything like Landry’s fictional Christian thrash band, Crucifictorious.

I first heard Cowboy and Indian at this year’s SXSW in Austin, Texas.  On an overcast Austin afternoon, heavy with humidity and the communal hangover of those left for the last moments of the festival, a few friends and I stumbled into a fenced-off lot next to a dark, near-empty bar, seeking good music and cheap beer.  In both we were rewarded as Cowboy and Indian took the stage.

Jesse Plemons Joins Cast of Paul Thomas Anderson Flick

Posted by Kaitlin with No Comments

Paul Thomas Anderson is directing another movie. Sure, we’ve known about it for a couple weeks now, but I feel like celebrating whenever I hear that bit of news. The project, formally titled The Master, already stars Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix in the lead roles, but now the cast has received a few additions.

Variety says that Laura Dern, Jesse Plemons and David Warshofsky have joined the film, which is set to begin production on June 13. Anderson’s first film since 2008, the unnamed project tells the story of an L. Ron Hubbard stand-in named Lancaster Dodd (Hoffman) who, after coming back from World War II begins his own church. Dern’s role is unspecified, but Plemons will play Dodd’s son while Warshofsky will be a detective. While both Dern and Plemons will be working with Anderson for the first time, Warshofsky played H.M. Tilford in There Will Be Blood

Spring Tour Dates for Jesse Plemons’ Cowboy and Indian

Posted by Kaitlin with No Comments

West Coast audiences are going to have a chance to sample the sounds of one of Austin’s hottest new acts when Cowboy and Indian head out on a western swing this April and May. The tour kicks off in Tucson, AZ at Club Congress on April 27.

The rootsy trio, which has earned comparisons with the legendary Carter Family, began when Jazz Mills (T-Bird and the Breaks) got together with Jesse Plemons to write their first song. The collaboration took off and before long the pair was drawing major buzz at SXSW. Daniel James (frontman of SF based Leopold and His Fiction) soon joined the band to complete the trio. “We came together out of nowhere and were immediately inspired by one another,” Mills said.

Cowboy and Indian continue to grow and evolve; they are now touring with a full band. Stephanie Hunt (vocals), Peder Gilham (bass and vocals), and Dorian Colbert (drums) have all joined the trio.

NY Times Reviews Jesse Plemons’ New Film “Meeting Spencer”

Posted by Kaitlin with No Comments

It’s not a backstage comedy, exactly, since the setting is Frankie & Johnnie’s, the well-known theater-district steakhouse, but “Meeting Spencer” is all about showbiz machinations, cogitations and aspirations. The film, though, directed by Malcolm Mowbray, isn’t quite savvy enough to compete with the slyest entries in that genre or madcap enough to run with the zaniest.

Jeffrey Tambor does good work as Harris Chappell, the once-noted director at the center of the story, who is hoping that the final work from a now-dead writer will turn into his Broadway comeback. But he needs financing. He is meeting his friend Didi (Melinda McGraw) for dinner and is expecting her to bring along a deep-pocketed boyfriend, but things don’t go remotely according to plan. Also invited to the dinner is Spencer (Jesse Plemons of “Friday Night Lights”), the son of a friend to whom Harris owes a favor.

San Angelo Standard Times Spotlights Cowboy and Indian

Posted by Kaitlin with No Comments

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Although this isn’t the first time she has performed for a hometown audience, San Angeloan Jazz Mills is ecstatic about next Saturday’s Cowboy and Indian concert at Angelo Civic Theatre.

Two months after the up-and-coming Austin-based band showcased its talents for the first time in San Angelo at the House of FiFi Dubois, Cowboy and Indian will have its first full-blown performance in the Concho Valley.

Mills, a Central High School graduate, started Cowboy and Indian as a duo last year with Jesse Plemons of “Friday Night Lights” TV fame. The group has since added four members, giving the eclectic band a unique sound and versatility that enables it to perform live with anywhere from two to six members.

Plemons, who sings and plays guitar and harmonica, isn’t the only musician with a Hollywood résumé. Bandmate Stephanie Hunt (vocals, tambourine and fiddle) also starred in “Friday Night Lights,” which ran for five seasons before the series finale two months ago.
