San Antonio Express-News Chats with Kyle Chandler

Kyle Chandler is feeling very fortunate.
Not too long ago, he moved his family from California to Texas — “this big beautiful state,” he said.
“I love it down here,” Chandler said in a phone chat from his home outside of Austin, not far from where Friday Night Lights was filmed. “I grew up in Georgia with horses, farmland, hunting, fishing … I couldn’t be happier than where I am right now.”
Adding to Chandler’s good fortune: He’s happy with how the fifth and final season of Friday Night Lights, which kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday on NBC, brought the critically acclaimed series to a close. And he got to work with J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg on what promises to be one of the summer’s blockbusters, Super 8.
“I was quite worried that, in the fifth year, we might jump the shark. There were a lot of story lines we already told,” said Chandler, who stars as Coach Eric Taylor. “I was really impressed with the writers. They ended it with a black suit and a bow tie – so classy.”

Based on the graphic novel series by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming, the project is a police procedural set in a world where superpowers are relatively common. It centers on two detectives, Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, in a homicide department that specializes in cases involving “powers.”
