Saying goodbye to Friday Night Lights was tough, but thank goodness The Chicago Code came around when it did because TV without Matt Lauria isn’t really TV — am I right?I recently had the good fortune to chat with the Dillon football stud-turned-rookie cop, who was nice enough to offer his insights on FNL‘s series finale. And knowing that not all of you are DirecTV inclined, he prefaced his thoughts with this request: “Only if you promise not to do anything to spoil it for the NBC fans.”“So, when I’m in the ambulance in the last scene…no, I’m just kidding!” he laughed.

In a way, it’s almost like Matt Saracen never really left Friday Night Lightsbecause in came Luke Caffrey. A good, polite kid, Luke seemed to have inhereted Matt’s need to always do the right thing. But Luke has become his own man during this fifth and final season of Friday Night Lights, which is currently airing on DirecTV. At NBC’s TCA party, the charming Matt Lauria chatted with me about Luke’s growth this season, going after the girl, the trouble that may lie ahead for Luke and Becky, and playing a cop on Fox’sThe Chicago Code, premiering Feb. 7. Warning: This post contains spoilers for Friday Night Lights season 5.
In “Don’t Go,” Coach Taylor announces that he’s going to stay in Dillon, which is kind of a surprising move. I was kind of surprised they revealed that so early on.
But the cool thing about it is, as you’ve seen over the entire course of this season, the team is getting tight and the great thing about that is that the relationships are a lot deeper and the drama is a lot hotter. The people that you love the most are the people that you bump heads with the hardest sometimes. Hopefully, we’ll get to see the team get somewhere this year.
