Could This Be Baby Riggins?

Posted by Kaitlin with 1 Comment

Hmmm…FNL needed a baby for the season 4 finale…looks like Mindy is on bed rest for the duration of season 4! I hope we see Tim do some babysitting, can’t you just see him pushing a stroller with a can of beer in the bottle holder?
Lights, camera, cry

Frisco native Kevin Verde may be able to give up his day job as chief information officer for Jason’s Deli restaurants now that his 2-month-old son is on Friday Night Lights. In November, Kevin’s wife, Jen, gave birth to Luca. The couple promptly took him to a photo studio for a portrait. Two weeks later, the photographer got a call from the Friday Night Lights casting director, who needed a newborn for the season finale.

Luca got the gig. Director Michael Waxman dubbed him a “one-take wonder,” who was both fussy and reserved on cue. There is a chance that Luca might be brought back for Season 5, in which case he’ll need his SAG card.

Directors Guild of America Discusses FNL’s Approach

Friday Night Fever

K.C. Hodenfield - Friday Night LightsTEAMMATES: 1st AD K.C. Hodenfield (right) tracks a shot.

Shooting at a breakneck pace, using handheld cameras and documentary techniques, directors, ADs, and UPMs capture the real-life drama of small-town America in Friday Night Lights.

By Rob Seidenberg

On purpose or not, it looks like Friday Night Lights is about to break the Guinness World Record for “Most Bodies Crammed into a 6-by-8-Foot Bathroom.” The camera A operator wedges inside a stall shower, shoulder-to-knee with his Gumby-like assistant, who trains a handheld camera on cast member Matt Lauria standing at the sink. Tumbling out into the narrow hallway two feet away, the B and C camera operators jostle for space with their assistants and a handful of PAs.

Meanwhile, in the living room of the empty tract house, director/producer Michael Waxman watches intently, one eye on the monitors and the other trying to steal a glance through the pile-up of bodies. More amused than anxious, he’s devising ways to shorten the scene, if for nothing else, to provide relief to his nearly trampled crew. “We’re not very precious,” laughs Waxman, recalling the bathroom acrobatics. “Whatever it takes to get the scene. It’s less thinking, more doing.”

Exclusive Photos & Commentary of FNL Filming in Boston

Posted by Kaitlin with 8 Comments

I would consider this post semi spoilerish, as it concerns scenes for episode 8 of the 4th season. Read with caution.

For those of you that don’t think social media is worthwhile I have a story that will change your mind. Last night Aimee Teegarden posted on her Twitter account that she had just landed in Boston. I didn’t think much about this because I figured she might be attending an event or spending a nice weekend here. I assumed that it would be nearly impossible to track her down and moved on with my evening. Fast forward to this morning and I read on Twitter that Aimee is “working today”…I hurriedly search Twitter and find out from the lovely people at Cardullos in Harvard Square (Cambridge Mass. for you non Massachusetts savvy individuals) that FNL would be filming in Harvard Square from 4-8pm today! I packed the cameras, got my mom, and we drove the half an hour into the city.

Harvard Square is not a large place, and as luck would have it the camera and lighting crew were already setting up when my mom and I strolled out of the T (subway for non-Bostonians) at 3:50pm. We hung around the crew, chatted them up, took photos, and asked where else filming had taken place that day. We quickly found out that Connie Britton & Aimee Teegarden had already filmed scenes at Tufts University, Boston College and Boston University earlier in the day, and that this would be the second outdoor scene of the day, and also the final scene to take place in Boston. It seems that our little Julie Taylor might be venturing off to college in Red Sox Nation!

To make a long story short my Mom and I managed to become extras in the scene they shot (cross your fingers that we’ll actually be visible when the episode airs!). Also, because it wasn’t publicized that FNL was going to be in Boston there were not many FNL fans meandering about, and so when Connie & Aimee’s vans rolled in from downtown Boston I was the only person asking them for autographs and photos. While it was disappointing they weren’t getting the star treatment they deserved, I was so grateful that they had the time to chat with me and take pictures. As the actual filming began it piqued more people’s interest, but almost no one had seen the show before, including the hired extras.

Other than having the opportunity to flood Connie Britton with compliments in person, the other highlight of my day was getting to talk to the director of the episode Michael Waxman. As shooting began he caught my eye because he was wearing an East Dillon Lions baseball hat and I decided almost immediately that I had to have a picture with him and that hat in order for my FNL dream day to be complete. As the filming wrapped for the day he was gracious enough to not only take 3 photos with me, but also chatted with me for about 15 minutes. He may even check out this site and our podcast because I of course filled him in on my intense dedication to the show. A big thank you to Mr. Michael Waxman…it was a thrill to get to talk FNL with you!

I have lots more to say about the events of the day, and some inside scoop on the filming of the Harvard Square scenes, but I’m going to save it for the podcast so make sure to tune in! Below are the (better) photos I got throughout the afternoon. Enjoy!

You think Connie Britton is pretty on TV? In person she is gorgeous. And lovely. Oh, and that average looking person on the right is me Kaitlin.

Yes this photo is blurry, mainly because my mother was too busy telling Aimee how beautiful she was. This actually happened. And yet, with Connie my mom played it cool?

In-between takes Michael’s tactic was to get in really close to the actors’ faces and give them tips. Part of me thinks he was trying to be discreet with the dialogue in a very public setting.

I made friends with the hair and make-up people when I showed them my autographed Improper Bostonian cover that Connie was so gracious to sign. They thought I was talking about her Redbook cover so I had to show them the goods!

It may be tough to see here, but that East Dillon Lions hat rocks. Especially since it’s not that abrasive red that Kyle Chandler has been wearing recently!
