New E! Spoiler Chat on Episode 5.01 “Expectations”

Posted by Kaitlin with No Comments

@themagicoflaura (via Twitter): Anything on FNL or 90210! :D
I’ll take FNL FTW! The final season of Friday Night Lights starts this Wednesday on DirecTV and is not to be missed. I know. You are so shocked that his quality show is, like, quality! But true story: I loved the season premiere. Tami reunites with her hubby at his school, Julie has all grown-up girl stuff going on (moving away to college), and the new QB Grey Damon (who was also the new quarterback on True Blood last season—but this time isn’t hooked on “V”) is totally drool-worthy. Plus, I’ve heard a thing or two about how the series wraps up, and at least one storyline is so giddy-good just the mention of it brought tears to my eyes. Either I’m that pathetic (don’t answer) or it will be that good.

E! Previews First Two Episodes of Season 5 of Friday Night Lights

Posted by Kaitlin with No Comments

Friday Night Lights, Kyle Chandler DirecTV/101 Network

Please ignore the trailer above. It’s for some glittery CW show that we don’t recognize. The first two episodes of Friday Night Lights season five, on the other hand, are exactly the kind of authentic Smithsonian-worthy television that we first fell in love with four years ago.

The original cast of FNL is all grown up—even Landry and Julie are off to college this year—but the greatest American heroes, Coach Eric and Tami Taylor (Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton), are still doing God’s work to save wayward children, and the children in question continue to be fascinating studies in metamorphosis.

So, if you need another reason to get DirecTV besides the fact that those mooks at Dish Network are screwing you out of your weekly Sons of Anarchy fix, here are five reasons to watch FNL season five when it premieres on the 101 Network Oct. 27 at 9 p.m.

The New Kid: “You’re in Texas now, son. You love football, you just don’t know it yet.” So sayeth Coach Taylor to the new kid in town, a hippie named Hastings Ruckle played by Grey Damon. We hope to bring you more about Grey later this month, but for now let us assure you that he’s not only gorgeous, but his well-traveled boho perspective is a great contrast to Dillon’s usual small-town insularity. And he’s gorgeous.

Ausiello Spills on Smash in Final Season of FNL

Posted by Kaitlin with No Comments

Question: The DirecTV press release about the final season of Friday Night Lights doesn’t mention anything about Gaius Charles returning. Does this mean Smash is not in season 5? If so, did they want to bring him back and couldn’t for scheduling reasons, or was it a creative choice? —Jake
Ausiello:
Smash will not be back for the fifth and final season, and, according to exec producer Jason Katims, creative and scheduling considerations came into play. “It was a combination of [Gaius'] availability and the storytelling,” he tells me. “With only 13 episodes, we ended up having to pick and choose which stories and characters to service. The story drives everything. We didn’t want to bring [alums] back just to bring them back. We wanted to make sure we had a good story for them.” That said, Katims says Smash is “referenced” in one of the episodes. “We find out how he’s doing in school.”

Ask Ausiello Spoiler

Question: You’ve given us great scoop about the final shed a tear season of Friday Night Lights, but one thing remains unanswered: Are we going to be lucky enough to have Minka Kelly return for a few episodes? Riggins putting her on the bus with a soulful “Goodbye, Lyla Garrity” is not enough closure for me. —Becky

Ausiello: Well, it was enough closure for exec producer Jason Katims—and he’s the boss! “I thought her final episode was so powerful,” says Katims. “We talked about bringing her back, but I didn’t really feel like anything we came up with beat the [Tim-Lyla] story in that episode, which I thought was really poignant. It wasn’t a happy ending, but it was a really satisfying ending for me. It was a satisfying resolution to that storyline.”

E! Spoiler Chat on Tim and Tyra in Season 5 of FNL

Posted by Kaitlin with 2 Comments

Gail in Canton, Ohio: Do you have anything, anything at all on the last season of Friday Night Lights? I know it doesn’t come back for awhile, I need something!
Friday Night Lights returns to our TV, (at least on DirecTV’s 101 network), at the end of October, but we know all of our old favorites are back, including Adrianne Palicki. But why does Tyra come back? “In the last few episodes you really find out why it’s been so hard for her to come back to Dillon,” Adrianne tells us. “She’s dealing with her own issues and you see a lot of what she’s been going through.” What kind of issues do you think brought Tyra back? Tim Riggins and his dreaminess? Discuss.

Philadelphia Inquirer Reports on Season 5 FNL Finale

Posted by Kaitlin with No Comments

WARNING: This article includes spoilers about the season 5 finale of FNL. Read ahead only if you don’t mind! Also, make sure to check out the photo album contained at the bottom of the article in the link!

How did Philadelphia get to host filming of Friday Night Lights, the critically praised, Texas-shot, DirecTV/NBC series about a high school football coach?

Connections.

Producer Nan Bernstein said writers wanted to use an “industrial Pennsylvania city and thought Pittsburgh, but we had an aggressive shooting schedule.”

Bernstein simply reached into her playbook. She coproduced the CBS series Hack, which was shot here from 2002 to 2004. Tuesday’s work at Temple University and Frankford High was a trip home as she greeted some of her old crew.

The exteriors were part of FNL’s series finale, to be shown next year. Tami Taylor (played by Connie Britton) job-interviews at a Philly college (”Braemore College – whose prop signs read “per angusta ad augusta,” or “through hardship to triumph”).

Philadelphia Daily News Reports on FNL Season 5 Filming

Posted by Kaitlin with 1 Comment

IF ASKED now to name his favorite television show, Mike Capriotti goes with “NCIS.”

That won’t be the case some Friday night this winter.

Capriotti, who has earned a certain amount of acclaim as the football coach at Frankford High, has now gone all Hollywood on us. Along with his players.

“Friday Night Lights,” the popular TV series based on the best-selling book, yesterday came to Frankford’s legendary stadium to film a two-pronged practice session – early evening in the sun; later at night under very powerful portable lights – that will wind up as part of a 2010-11 episode.

Nan Bernstein, the show’s producer, declined to reveal the plot twist. But in a pre-shoot, locker-room meeting, Tim Crowley, a Division I college football referee and a technical adviser to the show, detailed for Capriotti and the players what’s expected to happen and even mixed in a nice visual.

WWK Spoiler

Jon in Charlotte, N.C.: Anything on the final two episodes of Friday Night Lights? I need it to prepare for the end of season four!

Yikes, how are you gonna deal when the end of the series comes? Don't answer that. We're not ready either. Thankfully, the final two episodes of this season are remarkable, so hopefully that'll tide you over until season five starts. The controversy with Tami's advice to Becky reaches a breaking point, and the school demands a public apology. But she didn't do anything wrong, you insist? Well, Tami agrees.

Brant in Rockford, Ill.: The Riggins Brothers on FNL are just begging for trouble with that chop shop. Just tell me it works out in the end!

You think life in Dillon ever works out smoothly for anyone? Especially not for the Riggins brothers. Sorry to tell you buddy, but there are some rough roads ahead for Tim and Billy. But the silver lining to that is seeing Taylor Kitsch in some of his best acting in the series. And that's saying something.
